Texas Colleges are Preparing for Concealed Weapons, Accidents

In the wake of new Texas legislation allowing concealed handguns on college campuses, school administrators are determining how to comply with the law while still meeting safety concerns of students, parents and staff.

The “campus carry” law, signed last month by Governor Greg Abbott, takes effect in August 2016, allowing handgun permit holders – who must to be at least 21 years old – to carry concealed weapons into school buildings.

3 yr Old Shoots Self in Head with Grandparents Gun

AUSTIN, Texas, July 6 (Reuters) – A 3-year-old Texas boy who shot himself at a Houston-area home over the weekend died on Monday from the wound, officials said.

The boy’s grandparents were babysitting him and had put him down for a nap. They later heard a gunshot and found the boy had shot himself, police said.

After a relatively quiet start to the Fourth of July weekend in Chicago, a burst of gun violence overnight left three dead and 27 people wounded in just eight hours, including a 7-year-old boy killed after returning from a celebration.

“It’s crazy,” said Vedia Hailey, the grandmother of the boy, Amari Brown. “Who would shoot a 7-year-old in the chest? Who would do that to a baby? When is it going to stop?”

Rifle-toting gunman opens fire in Austin hotel lobby

AUSTIN (AP) — Austin police have shot and killed a man with a rifle at a posh downtown hotel who they say fatally shot another person in the lobby.

Assistant police Chief Brian Manley said at a news conference Sunday that the shootings occurred shortly before 5 a.m. at the Omni Austin Hotel, about four blocks from the state Capitol.
